  1. L.R.

The SaeboMas Mini is a great piece of kit for home use. It allows my husband to exercise his affected arm both independently and safely, and therefore build on exercises learned in therapy sessions. It has also given him the confidence of movement, previously restricted by fear of pain.

As a result of using the SaeboMas Mini device, my husband has gained muscle strength in his affected arm, as well as seen a reduction in his shoulder subluxation, which was previously quite impaired. His physio tells me that she now sees flickers in his triceps which is encouraging, especially when you consider the prognosis was for no upper limb movement at all.

I firmly believe that this is an essential piece of equipment for upper limb improvement, and would definitely recommend it.

  2. Michael-Che Swisher

I heard about the SaeboMAS from my occupational therapist. I was not recovering as we had hoped, so it seemed that I would have to adjust to my new disabilities instead of hoping for a full recovery. I was excited at the prospect of painting again with the use of the MAS. For almost a year, I had to rely entirely on my left hand. When Saebo shipped a MAS to my OT facility, I was amazed at the smooth motion I could accomplish with the support. Holding my arm up and moving it around were my biggest issues and the support helped with that. It also decreased the pain involved with both.

SaeboGlove FAQs

What is the SaeboMAS Mini?

The SaeboMAS Mini is a zero-gravity dynamic mobile arm support system specifically designed to assist, as well as challenge, the involved shoulder and elbow during functional tasks. This device is primarily used for neurological and orthopaedic patients that exhibit shoulder and elbow weakness.

How does the SaeboMAS Mini work?

The device assists the patient’s arm during tasks through an adjustable spring system. The spring system allows the arm to be facilitated throughout all planes of movement. Tension adjustments can be made so the patient can effectively incorporate the arm during functional activities. As the patient improves proximal strength, the spring support decreases to further challenge him or her at the appropriate level.

Can the SaeboMAS Mini be used in the home environment?

Yes. Although many hospitals and clinics use the SaeboMAS Mini for patient care, the device was primarily designed for home use. The SaeboMAS Mini includes a portable table mount that can be secured to most commonly used tables. Using the this device at home can help many individuals with maximizing their self-care needs while improving their quality of life.

What are the differences between the SaeboMAS and the SaeboMAS mini?

The SaeboMAS Mini is a portable and compact version of the standard SaeboMAS. The SaeboMAS is designed primarily to be used in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and private clinics. The SaeboMAS Mini is more appropriate for home therapy and paediatric rehabilitation.

How does it work?

  • Following a neurological or orthopaedic injury, it is common for clients to experience impaired arm and hand function resulting in decreased strength, coordination and range of motion. Often times, clients are unable to support or move their arm in order to perform exercises necessary for proper recovery.
  • If the arm has limited use, this may lead to impaired communication to the brain, further limiting function and movement following a neurological injury, such as a stroke.
  • Unfortunately, most clients do not receive enough range-of-motion exercises – either during therapy or at home – necessary to retrain the brain and gain functional range of motion. The lack of movement may also lead to increased pain and joint problems which further decreases the potential for proper arm recovery. For this reason, the SaeboMAS mini is the perfect solution to add to the recovery tool box.
  • The SaeboMAS is a zero-gravity dynamic mobile arm support system. In other words, the SaeboMAS mini removes gravity so the client’s arm is unweighted allowing for improved movement and function. By allowing the SaeboMAS mini to support the arm, clients can perform exercises to strengthen the weakened shoulder and elbow. This allows the patient the opportunity to perform highly repetitive exercises and functional tasks that would otherwise be impossible.
  • Since the SaeboMAS mini supports the arm during functional tasks and exercises, it reduces the amount of hand-over-hand assistance the therapist or caregiver must provide.
  • The SaeboMAS mini is fully adjustable, offering different levels of assistance, depending on how much support the patient may need. By simply turning a knob, the tension can be adjusted to offer more or less support. This feature is very helpful as the patient’s recovery may vary at times.
  • The SaeboMAS mini has a graded tension scale that is easily visible. This allows the therapist and/or patient to track and measure progress.
  • Because the system is a height adjustable, it offers the ability to perform exercises and tasks in many directions and planes.
  • It comes with a comfortable and bendable forearm support to custom fit various sized clients, and a removable liner for proper infection control.
  • There are 2 models of the SaeboMAS to fit a variety of needs:
    • The SaeboMAS is a larger MAS with a mobile base. It is portable and can be used while the patient is sitting, standing, or lying down. This unit may be more beneficial in a clinical setting to allow for easy transport throughout the clinic.
    • The smaller MAS, called the SaeboMAS Mini, is mounted on the table. This Mini may be more beneficial for patients that have less space to perform their exercises and activities.

How do I know it is right for me (or my patient)?

  • The SaeboMAS Mini is designed for individuals that have had injuries that result in:
    • Limited arm movement and function.
    • Shoulder weakness and/or pain.
    • Arm weakness, fatigue and/or pain.
  • Some diagnoses that may benefit from use of the SaeboMAS Mini include but are not limited to:
    • Stroke.
    • Traumatic Brain Injury.
    • Spinal cord injury.
    • MS.
    • Guillian-Barre.
    • ALS.
    • Brachial plexus injuries.
    • Shoulder injuries.
    • Elbow injuries.
  • The onset of the injury does not prevent someone from receiving Saebo treatment. Whether the client just had a stroke or orthopaedic injury, or if he or she suffered an injury years ago, the SaeboMAS mini can be of great benefit.

What can I (or my patient) expect?

  • Because of the zero-gravity technology, once the client is positioned in the SaeboMAS Mini, immediately he or she will notice the arm feels less heavy and the movement is more controlled.
  • With a weightless arm, the client will experience less fatigue and compensation, and require fewer rest breaks during exercises.
  • Often times, spasticity in the hand will reduce while unweighting the arm due to less effort and exertion. This may be important when attempting to perform self-care tasks involving the affected hand.
  • You do not need a therapist to order the SaeboMAS Mini.
  • Questions/comments for the client:
    • How are you spending your day training your arm and hand?
    • Are you moving/exercising your arm/shoulder enough?
    • Do you have to rely on someone else in order to exercise your arm?
    • Are you limited to being able to only perform important exercises while at therapy?

What are the contraindications?

  • Clients that may not be appropriate for the SaeboMAS Mini typically exhibit one or more of the below:
    • Severe shoulder/elbow pain.
    • Acute shoulder/elbow fractures.
    • Unable to follow basic commands.
